Tusting Review: From Tanning to Bags

Tusting started as a tannery in 1875. Today, they make the bags for Aston Martin. We review the firm that knows leather from the inside out.

Tusting Review: From Tanning to Bags

Most luggage brands buy their leather. Tusting makes it. Well, historically.

Founded in 1875, the Tusting family were tanners. They supplied leather to the best shoemakers in Northampton. In 1990, the fifth generation realized they could add value by making finished goods. Based in Lavendon, Buckinghamshire, Tusting is the "Insider's Choice" for leather luggage.

The Connection: Aston Martin

If you buy an Aston Martin and order the custom luggage set to fit in the boot, it is made by Tusting. This tells you everything you need to know about their quality standards.

The Aesthetic: Unstructured Luxury

Unlike Swaine (which is rigid and formal), Tusting bags tend to be softer, lighter, and more casual. Their Weekender bags use soft garment leathers or their signature "Floodlight" leather (waxy, aniline). They slouch. They are designed for the back of a Range Rover, not a boardroom. The Explorer is a canvas and leather mix that rivals Filson but feels more English.

The Verdict

Tusting is impeccable quality without the "preciousness" of some luxury brands. It sits in the "Affordable Luxury" bracket (Weekenders around £400-£600). For a bag you can use every day for 20 years, it is hard to beat.

Pros:

  • Incredible leather quality (tannery heritage).
  • Soft, lightweight construction.
  • Good value compared to frantic luxury.

Cons:

  • Branding is very quiet (might be a pro).
  • Styles are classic, rarely trendy.
